Welcome! We hope everyone is healthy and safe and that your states and/or countries are beginning to open up again. Hang in there. Things will get better.
We have been working with our video editor to put together our FREE webinar of You’re Amazing And I’ll Prove It! Matt Yerkes is our video editor and he is amazing! Our advertising guru Shane is putting together the final touches on our advertising campaign, which the FREE webinar is a huge part of. We can’t wait until New York State opens back up so that we can teach live classes again. It is so much fun. If you know of any organizations you feel that a You’re Amazing And I’ll Prove It! class would benefit from, please contact us so that we can contact them and schedule a class.
Now for this week’s story:
A friend of mine has a five year old daughter. He just discovered that she was born with extremely poor vision. His daughter has lived the first five years of her life seeing the world differently than other people.
My friend and his wife are amazing parents. The other day he told me how frustrating it is to do homework with her. He said that she would sound out a word and then not recognize it the next time she saw the word. This immediately hit a cord with me, only I didn’t know how to handle the situation so I didn’t say anything right then.
I waited and thought about the situation he was having. You see, if you don’t already know, I was born with extremely poor vision which wasn’t discovered until I was seven years old. The photo at the top of the blog is me at 11 years old. Because of this I am in a unique situation to help guide my friend in how to help his daughter.
After thinking about it for a day or two, I called him back. I told him I think he and his wife are amazing parents. I also told them about my first seven years of life of being virtually blind. Because of this I wanted to give them some information that may help.
I told them, first you have to understand how the brain works. From the moment you first open your eyes you are taking in everything around you. Sure, the brain doesn’t understand the signals at first, but little by little things start making sense. I told them, remember this all starts at birth, so by the time you are five your brain is already hard-wired.
Although his little girl was able to navigate the world without glasses, her eyesight was so bad she had never seen an alphabet letter or a number until two months ago. I also informed them that if they think it’s frustrating to them, they should consider how frustrating it is for their little girl. All these letters and reading come so easy for all the other kids. What’s wrong with me?
I also told them that there is really good news, because I know how to reach her. The reason I know is because I had a teacher that found a way to reach me. I use this teacher’s techniques to teach in You’re Amazing And I’ll Prove It! I said the way to get their beautiful little girl’s brain to start understanding letters, words, and numbers was to find her passions. I said, I don’t care what her passion is, it could be playing with Barbies or helping her Mom cook dinner. Whatever her passion is, you use it to teach her. For instance, let’s say her passion is Barbies. Use the Barbies to show how numbers works. Count the dolls. Count their shoes, and so on. When it comes to words, show her how the letters B-a-r-b-i-e spell Barbie and how it’s pronounced. Go out and get some Barbie coloring books with captions on the page. Color with her and read the words together. Her little brain will be absorbing all of it and not even know it.
Actually this teaching strategy will work for all kids from 9 to 99 and beyond. Find your passion. Use your passion to grow. Use your passion to learn. Your passion is what makes you feel alive. I’m not going to tell you that it will be easy, life is tough sometimes. However, I will tell you that if you go through your passions you will feel alive and fulfilled.
