Give Them Reference Points

Hope everyone is doing well. The young lady in the photo above is our beautiful granddaughter. It has been a busy week here at Knowledge Is Freedom Publishing. We hope you all had a chance to see my Easter video either on Facebook or on my Neal – The Crazy Inventor YouTube channel. Our tech guru Shane also uploaded another video to my channel last week entitled “How Two Spiders Changed My Life”. For those of you that are squeamish about spiders, the spiders are the ones that Lady Linda and I made, so no need to worry about scary spiders.

Today, I made another video that we just sent to Shane to get his feedback. Keep an eye out. That video should be up on my channel soon also.

We are also working on a webinar for the class that I teach on the concepts of You’re Amazing And I’ll Prove It! If all goes well, and our friend Matt Yerkes (a great photographer/videographer) is available and we can schedule a conference room, we should be able to shoot that next week.

Now for this week’s story:

As all of us do, I make my decisions based on past experiences. For four months after my kids suddenly lost their mother they had one major loss after another. The thing I was most concerned about, as far as my kids were concerned, is the fact that they had no past experiences dealing with grief. They had no reference points in dealing with the sudden death of their mother, much less all of the other losses.

The first thing I needed to do was to pass on any reference points I had accumulated throughout my life. For instance, just after her mother died, my daughter came to me and said, “Dad I’m going to have to live my whole life without seeing momma”. She was 15 years old. I said, “Strawberry, you’re not going to understand this. But there are some days that don’t grow old. They stay the same. They feel like they just happened. Many years from now, in some ways, it will feel like you just saw your momma.”

I know for some of you this example may seem like it would not help much. However, I have found that any reference point that allows a person to have a different point of view is a good thing. My daughter did feel better. Twenty years later she is a grown woman and she now understands what I was trying to tell her that day.

The point I want to make with this story, is during this time of the pandemic our kids are scared. And rightfully so. But they have no reference points. I was talking on the phone to a friend of mine. She told me her kids kept coming into her and her husband’s room and crawling into bed with them. They had stopped doing this years ago.

My friend asked them what was going on. Her son informed her that he and his sister could not sleep. He was having dreams that mom and dad got sick and died. His sister was having similar problems.

We discussed it and I told her that they can’t promise that nothing will happen to them, but they can give them as many reference points as possible.

This is Neal the Crazy Inventor’s point of view. Let me know what you think and how you would deal with the situation of the two kids unable to sleep because the pandemic might get mom and dad.
