Hi there! Lady Linda and I are excited to say that our new cover of You’re Amazing And I’ll Prove It! should be up on Amazon by the time you read this blog. That is the photo that we wanted to share with you this week. Well, it didn’t work so well inserting the new cover into the blog because it has a certain configuration. We had to put it into the heading on it’s side, but you can at least see what the new cover is like. If you want to see it upright you can go to Amazon and put You’re Amazing And I’ll Prove It! in the search bar.
We have been getting a lot of snow in the Northeast, so we hope everyone is safe on the roads.
Now for this week’s story:
One of the things that I have always been able to do is to see value in other people. Because of this when I was a young boy I liked to hang out with older people. I figured that they had wisdom that comes with time and I could learn this wisdom at a younger age by learning from them. The reason I am writing this blog series, Learn The Game of Life, is to pass on some of the knowledge I have accumulated during my 62 years of life to everyone.
Failure – A stepping stone – A friend of mine was telling me the other day that he was teaching his five-year-old son how to ride a bike. He told me his son was doing well, but from time to time he would fall and in one case he drove his bike into a pole. My friend told me every time his son failed he lovingly, but firmly told him to get up and try again. He added that he also told his son, do you have any idea how many times the greats failed before they became great? No matter what happened, the greats just kept trying and learning until they became great.
One of the things that has always bothered me, as an inventor, about our education system is that our kids are not being taught the value of failure. They are being taught that if they only get 65% they are virtually a failure. However, they are taught to really be a success they need to get 80 – 90%. When in real life, they only need to succeed a small fraction of the time in order to be a huge success. Because our kids are not being taught that failure is nothing more than a stepping stone, many of them stop trying the first time they fail.
When a child first tries to roll over they fail, but the parent encourages them and they keep trying until they finally achieve their goal. When a child tries to walk for the first time they fail, the parent encourages them until they finally achieve their goal. The parent encourages the child to keep trying after one failure after another. Then one day the parent tells the child not to try something because they might fail.
What happened? When did the parent decide failure was a bad thing? As soon as we teach our kids that failure is a bad thing and they should not try, much less keep trying through each failure, they stop growing. Teach your kids failure is nothing more than a stepping stone and just because they keep trying they are ahead of where they would be if they had not tried at all.
As an inventor, working on my different projects, I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I failed. Teach your kids to Keep trying, Keep flying.
